Special Visit

Today we had a special visit from Dr. Mike Lucas our district Superintendent of Education. He came to our class for about 15 minutes and watched as we did our morning calendar time. He was very complimentary of all of the boys and girls and the learning that was taking place in our class. Specifically while he was here we were using the smart board to aide in our calendar time. Thank you Dr. Lucas for stopping by to see what we are doing here at Fair-Oak. You can check out a Dr. Lucas' blog at the below site to see his thoughts on his visit and many other important issues in education. Enjoy! http://lucassdocblog.blogspot.com/

Pumpkin Carving

The finished product! Mrs. Duvall and the class carving out the pumpkin. Ethan and Britney just loved sticking their hands inside the pumpkin.
See what the inside looks like.
Today we carved our class pumpkin. We have been studying the pumpkin all week and talking about how it grows, smells, feels etc. Today we drew a pumpkin on our smart board and experimented with different shapes eyes, nose and mouth to see what our pumpkin might look like. We decided on two triangle eyes, a square nose and a mouth with two teeth. Finally, we carved the pumpkin and let all of the students that wanted to stick their hands down inside. Then we cut out the face and toasted the pumpkin seeds. We had a great time. We can't wait until Halloween tomorrow!

Clean Mud?

Today we made clean mud. Who ever thought that you could play in the mud and it be clean and you wouldn't get in trouble. Here are Skyla, Kimberly and Kevon playing in the mud. We have decided that we think it is more like snow than mud but nonetheless it is FUN!

To make clean mud you have to unroll six rolls of toilet paper and add it to water, borax and grated ivory soap. Here are the kids unrolling the toilet paper. This took longer than we thought but we had fun and the conversations that took place were priceless.

Hard work pays off. The clean mud was a blast!

Fall

I just love this time of the year. The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are changing and the children are all excited about Halloween and dressing up. In our class we have been talking about fall changes and the world around us. I am amazed at just how smart these kids are. When I begin to ask questions hoping that they will lead to teachable moments they surprise me with the knowledge that they already have. Thanks to all the wonderful homework that you sent in, we have been able to discuss different types of trees, leaves, colors, animals and their food, and much much more. Thank you for these precious children that teach me daily. I can't imagine how people live without these exciting encounters. My life would be so boring without these smiling faces. Have a wonderful day and look for more pictures from our fall walk in the coming days.

Mr. Kyle and Mr. Dillon

This week we had Teacher Cadets from West-Oak High School visit our class and shadow me. They were great guys and the kids loved them. Here we have Mr. Kyle. He plays baseball and is a Spirit Spiker. The kids were fascinated that he can drive a car. Imagine that!

Dillon McKinney also visited our class. he is a football player at West-Oak and he was kind enough to show the kids pictures of him playing football. We wrote stories about both of the guys. Mr. Dillon told us his favorite thing to do was camp in a tent.

We appreciate both of these guys choosing to spend a part of their school day with us. They kids thought they were great!

Mixing Colors

We have been learning about colors and what happens when you mix colors. On Thursday we read the book Mouse Paint. In the book a white mouse explores different cups of paint and realizes that when he goes from one cup to another and mixes the colors that new colors form. To demonstrate this we gave each child a zip lock bag filled with shaving cream. Then we ask them to decide if they wanted to make orange, green or purple. We then gave them food coloring droplets in the colors needed to make the new color and we sealed them and squished them until the new colors formed. This was a
great activity except for when Isaac's bag busted and he ended up GREEN! YUCK!

Tyler is creating PURPLE!

Ryan and Mariela make PURPLE!

Kylie enjoys making ORANGE!

More Center Fun!

Dakota, Ryan and Logan are creating the biggest block town you have ever seen.

Hunter and Kylie are learning how to sort things by size. They are learning how to work together.

Cassidy is playing on the computer. She enjoys this quiet time alone.

Jonathan and Skyla are working together to put all of the shapes in the right column.

Kevon and Cassidy are playing on our favorite school website http://www.starfall.com/

Center Fun

Ethan who is the tallest person in our class by a mile has just figured out that he can create a Lego tower that is as tall as he is. He is so proud!

Here Kimberly, Britney and Mariela are making shapes with Popsicle sticks, crazy glue, and glitter.

Victoria and Isaac are learning about letters by placing and counting the pegs that go in them. It takes a lot of space to do this activity.

What a caterpillar!

Have you ever seen a caterpillar that was this big? a student in Mr. Watson's class found this in their yard and brought it to school. They thought that we would like it and boy were they right. I must admit that I am a little scared of creepy crawlies, but i got brave quick, touched and held it and lived to tell about it. The kids were totally fascinated and we spent a good bit of time looking at this really cool creature.

Kevon and Mariela are trying to decide whether or not to touch the caterpillar.

An up close look!
